Another weekend, another short story dug out of the archives. This week it’s “Old Man,” a story that takes place in Vienna, my fictional Midwestern town which is not much unlike the one I live in. Often, these stories include fictionalized versions of real events and people. This story is no different. This was written for my mother for her birthday one year. It fictionalized some of the last years of her dad, my grandpa, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease. It doesn’t try so much to answer any of the big questions around such a time asĀ it tries to memorialize the person my grandpa was, even in those times.
